Kate Barker

Born in Devon in 1974, Kate is an artist who specialises in intricate black and white line drawings. She has a First Class Hons Degree in Fine Art from Manchester and has studied at The Faculty of Arts in Valencia. It was here in Spain Kate began her passion and enthusiasm for line drawing and printmaking.

Kate’s inspiration comes from the landscape and surroundings around where she finds herself. She has travelled extensively and different environments, cultures and people inspire and enrich her work.

Kate lived in Spain whilst studying for her degree and returned there later with her family to live and make work in the white washed towns or ‘pueblos blancos’ of Andalucia. On gaining her degree Kate travelled to India where she worked in a block-printing, family run textile company, in Rajasthan, Northern India. She went on to travel and explore North and Southern India, drawing wherever she went.

Having returned to live in London, Kate continued to make work and teach at The Print Studios, West London. In 2000 Kate came back to Devon where she lives and works today.

Her current body of work embraces drawing and the printmaking techniques of screen printing and mono printing. She uses the UK coastline as her subject, celebrating the diversity of the Devon coast with its’ waterways, coastal towns and architecture. Working outside on location, enables Kate to embrace the true feeling and spirit of a place. Her works are fluid and lure the viewer in with their intricacy and shear scale and detail. She has the ability to capture a natural representation of her subject yet with a contemporary twist.
